The story behind Persephone's Purse

Hi, I'm Amanda.

I'm Amanda—the founder, formulator, photographer, label designer, shipping department, and customer service representative behind Persephone's Purse. Every product you see here has passed through my hands, and honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Persephone's Purse didn't begin in a laboratory.

It began in a garden.

I've always loved growing things. That might sound strange because I'm terrified of bugs, but there was something deeply satisfying about planting a seed, tending it with patience, and watching it come to life. Eventually my vegetable garden gave way to herbs, and my curiosity kept growing right alongside them.

Growing up, there was always an aloe plant nearby. A scrape? Aloe. A burn? Aloe. Dry skin? Aloe. It seemed to be the answer for everything. That simple plant taught me something I never forgot—that the earth has an incredible way of caring for us.

So I started asking questions.

What made calendula so soothing?

Why was echinacea used for cleansing and renewal?

Could ashwagandha really help restore dry, textured hair?

At first, I grew herbs simply to make tea.

Then one day I wondered...

What if they could do more?

What if these same botanicals could become part of the way we care for our skin?

That question started years of reading, researching, testing, failing, reformulating, and trying again.

I wasn't interested in chasing trends.

I wanted products that worked.

I wanted skincare that was honest. Thoughtfully made. Rooted in ingredients with purpose instead of marketing buzzwords.

Most importantly, I wanted to create products for people who looked like me.

Luxury skincare shouldn't require a luxury price tag, and it certainly shouldn't overlook melanin-rich skin. I wanted to create something comparable to the brands lining department store shelves—but formulated in the spare room of my home, one small batch at a time.

Some formulas worked immediately.

Most didn't.

Some nights I wondered if I'd ever get it right. But every failed batch taught me something the successful ones couldn't.

I'd make a batch, ask family and friends to try it, listen to every piece of feedback, head back to my notebook, and start over. Every revision taught me something. Every mistake made the next formula better.

I'm still learning.

And I hope I never stop.

Because every better formula starts with admitting the last one could be improved.

Once I finally had a formula I was proud of, it was time to give the business a name.

Outside of skincare, I'm an English teacher, and I've always been fascinated by mythology. Persephone, the goddess of spring and renewal, felt like the perfect reflection of growth, transformation, and nature.

Then came the second half of the name.

Purse.

Growing up, there was always one woman who carried everything in hers. Aspirin. Bandages. Tissues. A peppermint. Somehow, whatever you needed, she already had it.

I wanted Persephone's Purse to become that for skincare.

A place where you could find whatever your skin needed—carefully made, thoughtfully chosen, and always within reach.

Today, every formula is still researched, mixed, poured, labeled, and packaged by me.

I'm not a factory.

I'm a workbench.

I'm notebooks filled with crossed-out formulas.

I'm scales covered in botanical powders.

I'm late nights chasing a better recipe because "good enough" doesn't feel good enough.

Persephone's Purse is still growing.

So am I.

Every batch teaches me something.

Every customer teaches me something.

And every bottle represents another step toward creating skincare that's as intentional as the people who use it.

Thank you for giving a small business—and one very determined woman—a place on your bathroom counter.

I hope every product reminds you to slow down, care for yourself, and do something we too often forget...

Pour into yourself.

With love and gratitude,

Amanda
